Herman Mandelkow, one of Elgin Township's best known and most progressive farmers was born in the province of Pommern, Prussia, April 7, 1873 and was about three years of age when his parents, William Mandelkow and his wife came to this country with their family and after short residence at Bloomington, Illinois, came to Iowa. They located at Le Mars.
He (William) followed his trade in Le Mars and moved to a farm in Grant township and later bought 640 acres in Section 8 Elgin Township and became one of Plymouth county's most substantial farmers and landowners. When the townsite of Struble was projected he sold to the promoters of the project 40 acres of his farming land before his death in 1904.
Herman Mandelkow was united in marriage to Lena Miehlke and to this union 5 children were born.
Herman (deceased), Emil, Clarence (deceased), Edward (deceased) and Alice. He raised livestock, fed 60 head of hogs annually and is also breeding fine Percheron and coach horses, now having about thirty head on the place. Mr. Mandelkow is the owner of a farm of 80 acres in Canada.Contributor's Note: These are not complete as the notes were in poor condition in the handwriting of the estate of Lila Mae Rees.
