Funeral services for Mrs. H. A. Powers, 91, well-known Emmetsburg resident, were held Tuesday (today) at 10 a.m. at the Congregational Church with the Rev. John M. Schaeffer, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery with Ellsworth-Beiter Funeral Home in charge.
Pallbearers were Charles North, Melvin Norland, Dr. Warren Marks, Carl Spies, Gerald Hofstad and Marvin Larson.Mrs. Powers died Saturday evening at Palo Alto Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient three years.
Mrs. Sarah Catherine Powers, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Perry Lamborn, was born Aug. 30, 1873, at Bellevue and attended Bellevue schools. She was a graduate of Valparaiso College.
On April 12, 1898 she was married to Dr. H. A. Powers at her parents' home in Bellevue. She was an early teacher in the Stillman school and taught second grade at Emmetsburg in 1898. The school building was a part of the present hospital and was located north of the Congregational Church. Mrs. Powers was the oldest member of the Friday Club, a member of the D.A.R and O.E.S.
She is survived by a son, Dr. Harold Powers, Topeka, Kan.; and two step-children, Dr. Roberts Powers of Emmetsburg, and Mrs. William (Mildred) S. Buchart of Buffalo, N. Y. Also surviving is a brother, Robert Lamborn of Battle Creek, Mich.
Mrs. Powers was preceded in death by her husband in 1929, her parents, four brothers and a sister.
Mrs. Powers had made many friends during her 66 years of residence here. She was a gracious, kindly person and the Powers home on the east drive of Five island lake was a hospitable one. Mrs. Powers liked to entertain her friends before her health failed in recent years and during her long hospitalization she welcomed their visits arid continued to be cheerful and interested in community events. She took pride in her three grandchildren, children of Dr. Harold Powers, and liked to hoar of their plans and their activities. The grandchildren are Mrs. Catherine Levinson, now in Brazil: Donald Powers of Yonkers, N. Y. and Harold, Jr., of Topeka. Dr. Harold Powers arrived here from Topeka the past weekend.
