“Jesse L. Galloway, 87, Laurens, died Tuesday, February 2, 1999, at the Pocahontas Manor.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, February 5, at Smith-Loterbour-Powers Funeral Home, Laurens, with Rev. Leland Grove officiating. Burial was at Laurens Cemetery, Laurens.

Survivors include wife Lila Galloway, Laurens; daughters Gertrude “Trudy” (John) Ebert, Spencer; Gladys (Keith) Godfrey, Estherville; son Dennis (Nancy) Galloway, Royal; eleven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Jesse was preceded in death by his parents; son Ervin Galloway, who died in 1960 and sister Alice Anderson.

Jesse LeRoy Galloway was born on June 16, 1911, near Curlew. He was the son of Benjamin and Sarah (Cross) Galloway. Jesse was educated in Curlew schools, graduating from high school in 1931. After he completed his education he worked for area farmers. On October 7, 1935, Jesse married Lila Leonard at the Methodist Parsonage in Emmetsburg. The couple lived in Curlew and Mallard before settling in Plover. In 1953, they moved to Laurens. Jesse worked at M. and J.R. Hakes until he retired in 1976. The couple has continued to make their home in Laurens. Jesse entered the Pocahontas Manor in January, 1999.

Jesse was a member of the United Methodist Church in Plover. He enjoyed fishing, playing baseball, horseshoes, cards, and cribbage. Jesse especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.”
