Former Resident Called By Death

The death of Mrs. Elizabeth Hopson, 77, former Emmetsburg resident and daughter of a pioneer Palo Alto county family, occurred at Omaha, Nebr. Friday, Aug. 15, following several months of ill health. Funeral services were held at the Assumption church Monday morning with the Very Rev. W. P. Mason officiating at the requiem high mass and preaching the funeral sermon.

Pall bearers were John Burns, Peter O'Brien, Frank Hand, Michael Fleming, Michael Conlon and William Hand. Burial was in St. John's cemetery with the Martin Funeral home in charge. The remains were brought to the Martin home and later to the home of Mrs. Hopson's brother, James P. Jones, here, where a large number of old friends and neighbors called to pay their last respects.

Mrs. Hopson, the former Elizabeth A. Jones, was the daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth Jones, coming here with her parents in 1872 from Alamakee county, Ia. Mrs. Hopson was born in Wexford, Alamakee county, in March, 1870. When the Jones family migrated to Palo Alto county, their friends, the late Jr. and Mrs. John Hand and Mr. and Mrs. James Keenan, all of Alamakee, came at the same time and they settled on farms in Great Oak township.

Mrs. Hopson attended the Central school in that township as a girl and later she went to Montrose, S. D. to visit relatives and remained to teach school there for several years. She then returned to Great Oak where she continued in the teaching profession, instructing in several county schools. She was married to William Hopson many years ago. Later she became a beautician operating her own shop in Emmetsburg and then opening a shop in Omaha, where she was active in the shops management until 1946 when her health failed.

She spent much time in various hospitals there, always hopeful of regaining her health but each time she was forced to return for further hospitalization. In July she made her final trip to a Catholic hospital in Omaha, but pneumonia and complications caused her death. A faithful member of St. John's parish in Omaha, she was also affiliated with the Third Order of St. Francis, a religious organization, and she was buried in the special brown robes of the order in honor of her longtime association and helpful work with the group.

Mrs. Hopson had many friends in this community as well as in Omaha who admired her for her charitable and friendly ways, and she was known as a successful business woman. Her long illness failed to discourage her and she maintained her cheerful manner despite much suffering. She is survived by four brothers, Bernard B. Jones of Mason City, R. Emmet Jones and Peter Jones, both of Florida, and James P. Jones of Emmetsburg. James P. Jones and Mrs. Jones only recently visited Mrs. Hopson in Omaha.

Other survivors include several great-nieces and nephews in North Dakota and one great-nephew, a lieutenant in the foreign service of the U. S. army. Relatives attending the funeral included a niece, Mrs. Clyde Russel, Mr. and Mrs. Elias Kilroy and Michael Kilroy, all of Mason City. To the bereaved family, sincere sympathy is offered in the death of their sister and aunt.
