E. F. Jones is Dead.

E. F. Jones passed away Thursday afternoon at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Jones, of this city. Mention was made in last week's Democrat of his return from Stanley, North Dakota, where he was taken ill in December, though we understand he had not been in the best of health during the greater part of the past summer. After his arrival at home, he rapidly declined, as his condition was such that he could not take any nourishment.

The funeral was held Saturday forenoon. It was largely attended. A requiem high mass was celebrated at Assumption church, Very Rev. J. J. Smith officiating. The interment was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were John J. Hand, T. J. Duffy, Thomas Kirby, Thos. O'Connor, P. H. Doolon, and W. I. Branagan.

The deceased was born in Allamakee county, Iowa, May 23, 1859. In November, 1872, his parents moved to Great Oak township, this county. He attended the local schools and later taught for several terms. Subsequently he studied law and was admitted to the bar at Des Moines in May, 1894. He practiced for a short time in this city with his brother, P. D., subsequently giving his attention to his profession at various points in North and South Dakota and Minnesota. He tried a case at Minot, December 4. It was his last. He is survived by his parents, six brothers, and one sister. William lives near Oakes, North Dakota, Charles at Mason City, Iowa, Peter D., at Stanley, North Dakota, R. Emmet at Minneapolis, Bernard at Vivian, South Dakota, and James in this city, though he is temporarily absent at Stanley, North Dakota. An only sister, Mrs. Wm. Hopson, lives at Merino, Colorado.

The deceased was widely and favorably known to the early settlers of our county. He was bright, genial and companionable and he was ready, friendly and willing to make sacrifices for the public good and the welfare of those among whom he mingled socially and otherwise. Many years ago the writer learned to value highly his unwavering friendship and his many appreciable qualities of heart and mind. He was an active and intelligent participant in public affairs and he ever championed aggressively, eloquently and fearlessly that which he believed was right. He was a favorite with his aged, fond, and devoted parents and though he met with reverses, he never neglected the ties that bind the true son to those whose most tender affections were entwined with his in helpless infancy, in buoyant youth and in developing, maturing manhood. For several years he had been far away most of the time, but absence did not detract from his zeal for their health and happiness. His death is a sad blow to them in their advanced years. The sympathy of all, especially those who, in days gone by, knew him as a classmate, companion, neighbor and friend, is extended to the survivors in the painful affliction that has come to them.
