Patrick Gorman Dies At Age Of 86

Came to Emmetsburg From Fort Dodge Twenty Years Ago

Patrick Gorman died at his home in this city Monday morning after quite an extended illness. He was not able to be about much for several years. His age was against him. The funeral was held this morning. Services were conducted at the Assumption church, Monsignor P. F. Farrelly officiating. The burial was in St. John's cemetery.

Mr. Gorman was born in the western part of the county Mayo, Ireland, March 17, 1836. His age was eighty-six. He came to the United States in 1852. He lived in New York until 1854, when he moved to Rockford, Illinois. In 1856 he came to Fort Dodge and in 1902 to Emmetsburg. He was married at Rockford, Illinois, in 1857, to Bridget Gaffney. Mrs. Gorman died thirteen years ago. The surviving members of the family are the two sons -- P. E. and William of this city and four daughters -- Mrs. D. J. Fitzgerald of Clare, Mrs. P. E. Jones of Emmetsburg, Miss Elizabeth Gorman of Gilmore City and Miss Jennie Gorman of this city.

Mr. Gorman was one of the fine old gentlemen of our county. He was genial, warm hearted and outspoken and he made friends of all who met him. Although his educational opportunities were limited, he was very bright and was off handed and witty. He did his own thinking and his judgment was sound. He was frugal, industrious and upright. He always tried to meet his obligations promptly. It was a pleasure to do business with him. He was a worthy member of his church and he led an exemplary life. The writer knew Mr. Gorman intimately for many years and prized his friendship and his good will. It is with sincere regret that we learn of his death. The sympathy of all is extended to the sorrowing members of the family.
