Great Oak Woman Died On Sunday

Mrs. James Mahan, 76, Passed Away After Short Illness, Mother of Nine Children. The Funeral Wednesday.

Mrs. J. M. Mahan, for seventy-two years a resident of Palo Alto county, died at her home in Great Oak township Sunday evening at 10:45 o'clock. She became ill about three weeks ago and her condition gradually grew worse. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock in the Assumption church, the pastor, Very Rev. J. T. Finnegan, officiating. Interment was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were C. C. Egan, J. P. Clare, Robt. Carney, Joe Mulroney, T. C. Nolan and Dan Murphy.

Mary Jane Lannan was born near St. Paul, Minnesota, May 30, 1859. Hence she was 76 years of age at the time of her passing. She moved with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Lannan, to Palo Alto county in 1863. The Lannan family located on the farm now occupied by the John Hughes family southwest of Emmetsburg. She was united in marriage to James M. Mahan in the old church in Emmetsburg in February, 1882. Rev. J. J. Smith performed the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Mahan moved to Graettinger shortly after their marriage where they made their home for two years. In 1884 they bought a farm four miles southwest of Emmetsburg where they subsequently resided. Mr. Mahan died a number of years ago.

Surviving are six sons and daughters. They are Miss Mary Mahan and Joe at home. Mrs. Loretta McNamara of Mason City, Miley of Mallard, Leo of Cedar Falls and William of Grundy Center. Two sons, James and John, and a daughter, Sadie, also preceded their mother in death several years ago. Two brothers and two sisters also mourn her passing. They are William and Joseph Lannan and Mrs. Wm. Murphy and Mrs. John McDonald, all residing at South St. Paul.

Mrs. Mahan was a splendid Christian woman who, during her long residence in our community, contributed her full share towards its development. She and her late husband reared a large family of nine worthy sons and daughters, six of whom survive to cherish their memory. Mrs. Mahan was a fond mother who saw to it that each of her children received good opportunities and she worked hard and made many sacrifices that they might develop into honorable and worthy citizens. She was a staunch member of the Catholic church and patterned her life according to its teachings. She was a good neighbor and enjoyed the good will and warm friendship of a wide circle of friends who will regret to learn of her passing. The Democrat joins with many friends in extending sincere sympathy to the surviving sons and daughters in the loss of their estimable mother.
