J. M. Mahan Passes Away

J. M. Mahan died at his home in Great Oak township Saturday evening. He had been more or less an invalid for nine years. He was a victim of anaemia. Nothing could be done for him. The funeral was held Monday morning. Services were conducted at Assumption church, Very Rev. J. J. Smith officiating. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were J. K. Martin, Thomas Kirby, P. Eaton, C. T. Nolan, John O'Connor, and Robert Carney.

The deceased was born in Walnut township, November 11, 1857. He was married in this city February 13, 1852, to Mary J. Lanan. There are four sons and two daughters living. The sons are Joseph, John, Miles, William and Leo. The daughters are Mary and Loretta. There are also three brothers and three sister living. The brothers are Myles, John, and Patrick. The sisters are Mrs. C. Donahue, Mrs. Peter Maher, of Muscatine, and Miss Essie Mahan, of Chicago.

The deceased was the third white child born in this county. He spent his entire life in this locality. He was industrious, frugal, and painstaking. He lived within his means and became prosperous. He made a splendid farm home for his wife and family. He was a man of excellent habits. There was nothing in his conduct that anyone could criticize. He was conscientious, always meeting his obligations punctually and fully. He was loyal in his friendship. He clung to those in whom he had confidence. He was sincere and he was religious, ever giving loyal support to the church of which he was a member. His death will be sincerely mourned by all who knew him and the memory of his edifying life, his meritorious deeds and his kindness as a husband and father will ever be a source of pride and consolation tot he surviving members of the family. The Democrat joins their many relatives and friends in extending sincere sympathy in their sorrow.
