Thos. H. Grace is Dead.

One of the respected pioneer residents of our county, Mr. Thomas H. Grace, died at his home in Emmetsburg township Sunday morning. He had been ill for a couple of months. The funeral took place yesterday. It was well attended. The services were held at Assumption church. They were conducted by Very Rev. J. J. Smith. The interment was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were Robert Shea, M. F. Kerwick, M. Joynt, Chris Donahue, Patrick Joynt, and Chris Claer.

The deceased was a native of southern Maine, where he was born in 1826. Hence he was 80 years of age. He was married in Boston, in 1854, to Mary Ann Gamble. Mr. Grace served in the Union army during the civil war. He was a brick layer by trade and spent most of his time while in the service in building bridges, fortifications, and in other work of this kind. In 1865 he and his family came to Palo Alto county and settled on a homestead, the place where he died. Mrs. Grace passed away at the home of her daughter at Denver about ten years ago.

The surviving members are one son and two daughters. The son, William, is one of the successful, prosperous farmers of Emmetsburg township. The daughters, Miss Adaline, and Mrs. Walters, reside at Denver. They could not be present to attend the funeral.

Mr. Grace was a high minded, conscientious, most worthy citizen. His neighbors, who knew him for 41 years, had the highest respect for him, for he at all times performed willingly and satisfactorily his obligations as a neighbor. He was not a pretentious man. He knew what society required of him in the station in life in which he was placed and he was ever ready to discharge any reasonable duty assigned him. He had a proper regard for the feelings of others. He attended strictly to his own affairs. He was noted for his taste and neatness. He was as prompt, painstaking and conscientious in his dealings with others. He was a man of strong religious convictions and he was ever loyal to them. The memory of his long, well spent useful career will be fondly and justly cherished by the sons and daughters who survive.
