Nicholas Adams’ Sudden Death.

Saturday evening Nicholas Adams died suddenly of heart failure at his home in Vernon township. Friday evening he ate a hearty super and went to bed feeling as well as usual. About four o’clock in the morning Mr. Adams was aroused and found him dying. He never spoke and passed away in a few moments. The funeral was held Monday. The services were conducted at the Catholic church at Graettinger and the interment was in the parochial cemetery at that place. The pall bearers were Joseph Monsel, Edward Kane, Frank Swift, J.H. Miller, John Kelly and Mr. Moran. There was a large procession.

The deceased was a native of Luxemburg, Germany, where he was born April 13, 1836. He came to the United States at the age of 18. He spent some time at Dubuque and later moved to Chickasaw county, Iowa, where he had lived for several years. He was married at North Washington, that county, to Lucinda Witzel, in 1870. Mr. and Mrs. Adams moved to Kossuth county in 1881 and three years later to Palo Alto. Nine years ago the deceased bought a farm in Vernon township where he and his family resided until death called him so suddenly from life’s familiar scenes. The surviving members of the family are the wife, four sons, and six daughters. The sons are Frank N., Andrew A., Matthew F., and John P., all of this county. The daughters are Mrs. John Galliger, of this city, Mrs. John Hollander, of Mallard, Miss Emma Adams, of Seattle, Washington and Misses Anna A., Lena F., and Clara J, who are still at home. All were present at the funeral except Miss Emma and Mrs. Hollander. Henry and John Adams, nephews of the deceased, and Mrs. Winters, a sister of Mrs. Adams, all of Chickasaw county, were present to attend the funeral. A brother of the deceased lives in Chickasaw county.

Mr. Adams was one of the plain, unassuming, thrifty, sturdy German farmers of our county. He was generous and open hearted and was widely respected because of his sterling integrity. His word was as good as his bond. He was one of the staunchest of friends and he was an ideal neighbor and citizen. He was a devoted husband and solicitous parent. His most exemplary career is well exemplified in the lives of he large family of respected sons and daughters who survive him. Mr. Adams was for eighteen years among the Democrat’s loyal friends and supporters and it is with profound sorrow that we lean of his sudden death. We sincerely sympathize with the sorrowing wife and other members of the family.
