Emmetsburg Democrat; Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa; Wednesday, April 20, 1904

Death of Mr. Pfiffner, Sr.

Mrs. Urusula Pfiffner died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. Schirmer, Monday, April 18, after an illness of four months’ duration, mention of which had been made in these columns. The funeral wil be held at Assumption church at 10:30 today and will be conducted by Father Costello. The interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.

The deceased was born at Mels, Switzerland, August 15, 1820. Her maiden name was Ursula Tschirgi. She came to the United States in 1848. She was married at Galena, Illinois, the same year, to Henry Pfiffner. The latter died at that place October 3, 1864. Mrs. Pfiffner was the mother of ten children, two of whom survive. They are H.J. Pfiffner and Mrs. S.F. Schirmer, both of this city. A sister, Mrs. Kucheman, lives at Bellevue, Iowa and a brother, Frank Tschirgi, at Grundy Center. There are seven grandchildren and three great-grand children. Mrs. Pfiffner came to Emmetsburg in 1882 and subsequently made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Schirmer.

The deceased was one of those sincere, unassuming old Christian ladies whose zeal, earnestness and attention to the cares of home and family have done so much to mould the lives and purposes of the exemplary and successful men and women of our day and age. She knew well her duties as a wife and mother and she was steadfast in her devotion to what she believed to be right. She was of a mild and generous disposition and also had ever a conscientious consideration for the comfort and welfare of those about her and especially those who, by the fondest and dearest of ties, had the strongest claims in her loving care. She was idolized by her grandchildren, who tried to every way to make her declining years pleasant and peaceful. She lived to a ripe old age and was favored with a long hoped for, peaceful passing unto those realms whence no weary traveler returns. The sympathy of all is extended to the survivors.
