Leo James Clare, the son of Chris and Roseann Clare, was born December 4, 1895 at Emmetsburg, Iowa and departed this life at Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa on Sunday, June 20, 1976 at the age of 80 years, 6 months, and 16 days.
He received his education in St. Mary’s Grade School and graduated from St. Mary’ High School in Emmetsburg, Iowa.
On November 2, 1917, he was united in marriage to Eileen Murphy at Graettinger, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Emmetsburg and Graettinger areas until 1926 when they moved to Estherville, Iowa. He was employed by the Rock Island Railroad for thiry-six years, retiring on May 31, 1963.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville and was a member of Knights of Columbus for thirty years.
Mr. Clare is survived by his wife, Eileen; on son, Robert Clare of Platteville, Wisconsin; two daughters, Mrs. Glen (Leona) Anderson of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Mrs. Marvin (Mary) Wilberg of New Richmond, Wisconsin; twenty grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Rose Crook of Newton, Iowa; and two brothers, Joe Clare of Sacramento, California and Vincent Clare of Knoxville, Iowa. He has been preceded in death by two sons, two daughters, one grandchild, and his parents.
