Final Rites for County Pioneer
Mrs. Rose Clare, 85, one of Palo Alto county's pioneers, died in her home in Emmetsburg, February 16. She had been ill for 18 months. Funeral services were held Saturday from the Assumption church with the Rev. Father Schissel officiating. Interment took place in St. John's cemetery and J. J. Martin and Sons Funeral directors were in charge of arrangements.
Serving as pallbearers were Dennis Carroll, Jim Burns, Andy Grace, Bert Ryan, Lou Phillips and P. C. Jackman.
Rose Ann Murphy was born October 7, 1858, in Elgin, Ill., and came to this county with her parents when she was a small child. In 1875 she was married to Christopher Clare in the Assumption church. She lived on a farm in Emmetsburg township until 1917 when she moved to Emmetsburg. She lived here until the time of her death.
Surviving her are six sons and two daughters. The sons are Joe Clare of California, Leo Clare of Estherville, Thomas Clare of Charles City, Vincent Clare, Edward Clare and P. J. Clare, all of Emmetsburg. The daughters are Mrs. Mary Veruil of Chicago and Mrs. Rose Crook of Newton.
She also leaves three brothers and a sister, Matt Murphy of Graettinger, Ed Murphy of Estherville, Mrs. Thomas Burns and Dan Murphy, both of Emmetsburg. Also surviving her are 26 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, six children and four brothers and sisters.
