Patrick Lynch Family

This brief history of the Patrick Lynch family was submitted by Margaret Lynch, their granddaughter, a retired school teacher who lives in a retirement home at Sutherland, Iowa.

Her grandfather, Patrick Lynch, was born in Ireland, and he married Mary McQune of Indiana. After their marriage they homesteaded in Vancouver, B.C. in 1881. Later they came to Iowa and moved to a farm in Booth Township, southwest of Ayrshire. While on this farm they were saddened by the death of two sons, Joe and Austin, on the same day of pneumonia. They are buried at Emmetsburg as are their parents.

Jim, the oldest, worked for the railroad and while working he broke his leg. While spending some time in the hospital he won the Irish Sweepstakes of $15,000. He later went to the gold fields in California. He sent back gold nuggets to his family. and Miss Lynch still has one in her possession.

The remaining family members are Andrew, Tom, and Martin. Mary married James Everett of Ayrshire. Mrs. Lynch was a cousin of Ed Foy, a former Emmetsburg mortician.
