History of the Paden Family

In the early 1860's Henry and Edward Sanders settled here [Ayrshire]. They lived in a sod house and later built the present house on the Ollie Larson farm.

In about 1888 Henry met and married a "mail order" bride. He went to Massachusetts to marry Catherine McCall, direct from Ireland. They became the parents of 8 children, 3 of whom died at birth. Their children were: Sophia, Henry, Edward, Theresa and Mary.

Sophia married Ollie Larson and they had 8 children: Catherine, Vern, Mary, Kenneth, Cecil, Ruth, Irene, and Ralph.

When Thomas Foy Paden came to visit his Aunt Liz (Mrs. Jim) Dwyer, he rode the freight train to Curlew and then walked up the railroad track. He stopped at the Sanders farm to ask directions to the Dywer farm and that is how he met Mary Elizabeth Sanders. Love blossomed and they were married on September 23, 1914. They farmed the farm where Leslie Hill now lives. Foy helped build the house n the Hill farm. In the early years of marriage they owned a team of mules that would bring them home from town when they got in the wagon. Many a day Foy would plow through the snow to pick the kids up at school. They were boarding at the convent in Ayrshire. Some of them also attended school in Curlew as well as the country school. For a number of years Foy was the director of the Great Oak No. 9 School. He also worked on the railroad, and in the creamery. In the later years he was a bartender.

During their years together, they had 8 children. Catherine, the eldest, married Clyde Dennis; Marie married Harold Allen, and they have 1 child, Mary; Bessie, Bernard, Robert and Helen were never married but lived together on the old Tom Fagen farm; Henry married Gladys Meyners and had 5 children; Rebecca (Fitz) who has 2 children, Michael, Lorae (Baker), Thomas and Neal; Rose married Leslie Hill and were the parents of 6 children, 2 of whom died at birth; Nancy, Darlene, Leslie Daniel and Gloria. Gloria is married to William Garber and they have one son, Ryan William.
