Joseph Daniel Higgins Family

Joseph Daniel Higgins was born on July 21, 1867. His parents, Daniel Joseph Higgins and Bridget Joynt, were born in Dyersville, Iowa.

Joseph married Mary Bridget McCormick on Feb. 12, 1896. at the Assumption Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa.

Mary Bridget McCormick was born in Black Hawk County on October 23, 1870. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. J.J. McCormick. They moved on a farm in Great Oak Township for years. Joe Higgins lived on the same farm until his death in 1950 at the age of 83. Mrs. Higgins moved to Emmetsburg in 1950 and remained there until her death on April 26, 1859. She passed away at the age of 87. In 1946 they celebrated their golden wedding at the Sacred Heart Parish in Ayrshire, Iowa.

To this union nine children were born:
Nellie, who joined the Sisters of Charity in 1923, Sister M. Damina BVM was a teacher until her death in 1964.
Daniel J. Higgins was married in 1950 to Anastasia Donovan. They lived on the home place until his death on May 3, 1977.
Aileen Higgins who lives in Emmetsburg.
Genevieve Higgins married Vernis Farrell and lived on a farm in Great Oak Township until 1963 and now lives in Emmetsburg.
Wm. F. Higgins, who died in 1942.
Walter J. Higgins married Catherine Malloy and lived on a farm in Great Oak Township until his death on March 3, 1977.
Lucille Higgins married Robert O'Neill and lives in Rockford, Iowa.
Marie Higgins married Donald Murphy and lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, until her death on June 8, 1973.
Gerald E. Higgins lived on a farm in Great Oak Township. He died in Emmetsburg on April 30, 1971.

Twenty-three grandchildren survive.

Grandfather John McCrmick was born in Sligo, Ireland, in 1836. In 1859 he came to America and settled in New York.

In 1862 he married Ellen Gunnod and moved to Iowa and settled in Black Hawk County and lived there 21 years. In 1886 they moved to Nevada Township and farmed there until he retired. They moved to Emmetsburg and lived there until he died. Mrs. McCormick lived with her daughter, Mrs. J.D. Higgins, until her death.

Daniel Joseph Higgins and Bridget Joynt were born in Ireland. They came to America and lived in Dyersville, Iowa. Mr. Higgins was a blacksmith there and the family was born there.
