Phillip Jake Keller, son of Phillip and Marie (Hochner) Keller, was born near Melvin, Iowa on March 17, 1890. He lived his youth, attended school and grew to young manhood in this vicinity.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Emily Olson on November 30, 1922. After their marriage they farmed on the farm where he was born. In 1949 they moved into the town of Melvin. His wife, Ruth preceded him in death on August 28, 1959 and after her death he continued to make his home in Melvin.
Jake was involved in a car accident on September 23, 1981 and was hospitalized at St. Luke's Hospital at Sioux City from injuries sustained from the accident. On November 5, 1981 he was transferred to the Osceola Community Hospital, Sibley, and passed away there on December 13, 1981 at the age of 91 years, eight months and 26 days.
He is survived by two sons, Clifford of Melvin, Iowa and Duaine of Mesa, Arizona, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ruth, one grandson, Phillip, one brother, Walter, and three sisters, Elizabeth Gildemeister, Martha Imhoff and Marie Frederking.
He was a member of the Melvin United Methodist Church of Melvin, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 13 at the Melvin United Methodist Church. The Rev. Paul Hansen officiated.
Casket bearers were Art Frederking, Gerald Fessler, Carl Keller, Albert Imhoff, Robert Struchen and George Gildemeister.
The congregation sang, "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Organist was Mrs. Roy Van Houten.
Interment was in Baker Township Cemetery, Melvin; with the Sanborn Funeral Home in charge.
