Emil Berendt was born February 9, 1875 in Berlin, Germany. At the age of 7 years he came to America with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Berendt. He spent his boyhood days near Danbury, Ia. In December 1905 he was married to Minnie Imhoff. They lived on a farm near Melvin until the spring of 1913. At this time they moved to Worthington, Minn., for the summer, returning in the fall to make their home in the town of Melvin. Five years later in the spring of 1918 they moved on the farm one mile east and one mile north of Melvin. However after one year they returned to Melvin.

His wife preceded him in death October 2, 1938. On April 11 he suffered a stroke which paralyzed his left side. He was taken to the hospital in Sioux City, where his death came August 8th. He attained the age of 72 years, 5 months and 29 days. He leaves to mourn his departure, two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Schau of Battle Creek, Ia., and Mrs. Herman Workmeister of Odebolt, Ia.; two brothers, Fred of Sioux City and William of Mapleton, Ia., and five step-children, Mrs. Lesittie Imhoff, Mrs. Harmon Hitchcock, Lou and Will Graves, all of Melvin and Mrs. Miles Hokuf of Los Angeles, Calif., and a host of friends.
