Harold Wayne VanDerSluis, the son of John and Cora (Veldboom) VanDerSluis, was born at Orange City, Ia., on April 10, 1929. He lived at Orange City until he was eight years old when he moved with his family to the Archer area. He received his education while residing in the Orange City and Archer areas. Following his education, he worked at the Sanborn creamery as a butter maker. Harold served his country in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves from 1951 to 1957.
He was united in marriage to LaVonne Fear on May 9, 1952 at Paullina, Ia. Following their marriage they lived at Paullina and Boyden before moving to a farm south of Archer in 1957. In the fall of 1966, they moved to their current farm residence. For the past 14 years, he served as a Pioneer Seed Corn Sales Representative. He died at Baum-Harmon Memorial Hospital at Primghar, Iowa on January 29, 1995 at the age of 65 years, nine months and 19 days.
He is survived by his wife, LaVonne of Archer; his children: Cheri Mullen of Hospers, Jeffrey of Spirit Lake, Pamela Kobbe of Sheldon, and Lynnette McAlpine of Sheldon; 14 grandchildren, and three brothers: Ronald VanDerSluis of Primghar, John VanDerSluis,Jr. of Archer, and Les Douma of Rock Valley.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was a member of the Archer United Methodist Church where he currently served as church treasurer and had served as Sunday School teacher and had assisted with many Christmas programs. He also belonged to the American Legion, V.F.W., the Masonic Lodge of Primghar, the Order of Eastern Star Coral Chapter of Sanborn, where he was a Past Worthy Patron, a member of the Sioux City Consistory, and the Abu Behr Temple of Sioux City where he was a Hospital Dad. He had been associated with the A.S.C.S office for 25 years where he had served as a committeeman for nine years and was a past member of the Elevator Board, Co-op Board, Archer Community Board, Sanborn Funeral Home Board, and the Sheldon Co-op Oil Board. Hobbies that Harold enjoyed were fishing, golfing, and his toy tractor collection. A very important part of his life was the time he shared with his family. Funeral services were held February 1 at the Archer United Methodist Church with Rev. Lucy Elrick officiating. Casketbearers were Bob Baxter, Boyd McQueen, Tim Mullin, Rod Douma, Jeffrey VanDerSluis and Randy VanDerSluis. Congregational hymns were "In the Garden" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Deb Baldus was organist. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery, Sheldon, with Sanborn Funeral Home in charge.
