Gretta (Burt) Protextor, the daughter of Charles and Henrietta (Downs) Burt, was born at Waukon, Iowa, on February 21, 1899. She received her education and graduated from high school at Waukon. Following graduation, Gretta moved to Sanborn where she taught school for several years.

She was united in marriage to Emmett L. Protextor on December 25, 1918, at Waukon, Iowa, and to this union two children were born: Marjorie and John. Following their marriage they farmed near Sanborn and after retiring from farming, they decided on an acreage. Emmett died on October 2, 1984, Gretta entered Prairie View Home at Sanborn on June 22, 1988, and she died at Braum-Harmon Memorial Hospital at Primghar, Iowa on January 23, 1995, having reached the age of 95 years, 11 months and two days.

She is survived by her children: John and Pearl Protextor of Sanborn, and Marjorie and Jean Wells of Pasadena, Tex., five grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Gretta was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, and three brothers.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sanborn, the Rebekah Lodge, the American Legion Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary of Sheldon. Special hobbies that Gretta enjoyed were fishing, playing cards, and flowers.

Memorial services were held February 26 at the First Presbyterian Church at Sanborn with Rev. Keith Pals officiating.

Casketbearers were Frank Gonzales, Doug Schnoor, Greg Vogelaar, Terry Protextor, Phillip Wells and Dale Fulk.

Brad and Joy Smith sang "Precious Lord Take My Hand," "How Great Thou Art." Chris Van Meeteren was organist.

Burial was in Roseland Cemetery, Sanborn with the Sanborn Funeral Home in charge.
