Funeral services were held for Eugene Edward Bates, age 68, on March 22, 1996 at Turner Funeral Home in Milford. Officiating the service was Rev. Gene Hermeier and providing music was Pat Schnell, organist.

Pallbearers were members of the Milford American Legion, Post 384.

Eugene Edward Bates was born to Fred and Minnie (Ackerman) Bates at Estherville on May 9, 1927.

He graduated from Ocheyedan High School in 1947. Eugene served in U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After the service Gene farmed near Ocheyedan.

In December, 1953, he began working as an electrician first for area electrical contractors in Milford and Spencer and later at North Platte, Nebraska. He than worked as a welder over ten years in Aurora, Illinois. In 1978 he began working for Winnehago at Forest City and later in security for Waldorf College.

In recent years Gene has been living at the Boji Apartments in Milford which he helped manage. Gene has been residing at the Hilltop Care Center since December of 1992.

Mr. Bates passed away at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Spirit Lake on March 19, 1996.

He was a member of the Moose Legion in Aurora and was proud member of the American Legion having served as an officer. He loved bowling, camping, fishing and playing basketball in his youth.

He is survived by his children and their families, Arnold Bates and his wife Laurie, their children Dawn and Justin, Roger Bates and his wife Diane and their son Brandon, Clayton Seeman and his wife Linda and their daughters Nicole and Holly, Skip Seeman and his wife Brenda and their children Scott and Daniel, Debora Nissen and her husband Rod and their children Allicia and Melissa; two sister, Helen King of Windom, Minnesota and Myrtle Dirks of Ocheyedan; and one brother, John Bates of Ocheyedan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Melissa Henrietta; and one sister, Dorothy Frick.

Interment was in Ocheyedan Cemetery in Ocheyedan with Turner Funeral Home of Milford was in charge of the arrangements
