George Baker
1870-1969

George Baker, age 98, died at the Hartley Community Hospital in Hartley. He made his home for a number of years in the McCroskey Nursing Home. He had been ill about four weeks.

He was in the Netherlands in 1870 and emigrated to the United States at the age of 17, settling in New Jersey.

He was united in marriage on May 18, 1897 to Tillie Bush. they would have observed their 72nd wedding anniversary in May.

From New Jersey they moved to Orange City and then to Ocheyedan. They returned to this vicinity after living at Volga, South Dakota for a time. They then resided at the McCroskey Nursing Home in Hartley.

Baker was a member of the Ocheyedan Christian Reformed Church.

He was preceded in death by two infant children and by his son, Andrew

Surviving are his wife, three sons, Harry and Albert of Ocheyedan and John of Henning, Minnesota and four daughters. They are Mrs. Pete (Minnie) Houtsman of Sibley, Mrs. Case (Nellie) Bakker of Volga, South Dakota, Mrs. Cornie (Clara) Houtsma of Orange City and Mrs. Ted (Jennie) Ferguson of Allendorf. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Nick VanderWal and Mrs. Jennie DeJong of Patterson, New Jersey and more than a hundred grandchildren

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 15 at the Christian Reformed Chuch in Ocheyedan with Rev. Peter VanDrunen officiating

Burial was at Ocheyedan
