Henry Houwen, age 93, of Sibley, Iowa, formerly of Ocheyedan, Iowa, passed away on Friday, March 2, 2007, at Sibley Nursing and Rehab in Sibley.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 12, 2007, at 11:00 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Sibley. Rev. Terry Simm officiating.

Burial in the Gilman Township Cemetery in Ashton, Iowa, at 1:30 P.M. Monday, March 12.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 11, 2007, from 1:00 to 6:00 P.M. with the family present from 2-4 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home in Sibley.

Henry Houwen was born on June 30, 1913, in Lyon County, Iowa, the son of Ben and Lena (Norman) Houwen. Henry's father farmed and the family lived on various farms in the Ashton, area, where Henry also attended school.
Henry was united in marriage to Dorothy Johnson of Sibley, Iowa, on August 29, 1943, in Sibley, in Dorothy's mother's flower garden. Henry and Dorothy made their home on various farms in Osceola County. They were beekeepers for many years. They also operated popcorn stands at Sibley, Ocheyedan, and the Osceola County Fair, for many years. Henry farmed until his retirement, in 1970. Upon his retirement, Henry and Dorothy moved to an acreage in Wilson Township. Henry also worked at the Nystrom Apple Orchard. He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby and made many toys for his grandchildren, as well as, many wood projects for others.
Henry will be remembered as a very loving, caring, gracious, even-tempered person, with a witty, dry sense of humor. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Henry was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sibley, for over 50 years. He served on the Historical Committee for the Centennial.
Henry has resided at the Sibley Nursing and Rehab Center for the past 4 years, where he passed away on Friday, March 2, 2007, at the age of 93.
Henry is survived by his wife of over 63 years; one son, Harry and his wife Elaine Houwen of Petersburg, VA, two daughters, Mary Klinkenborg of Rock Rapids, IA, and Nancy Bosma and her husband Vern of Harris, IA, son-in-law, Gary Vander Pol and his wife Mary of Sibley, IA; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ruth (Clifford) Willemssen of Sibley, IA, Leona Johnson of Las Vegas, NV; one brother-in-law, David (Nellie) Johnson of Worthington, MN.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Cindy Vander Pol; one son-in-law, Myron Klinkenberg; one granddaughter, Melanie Klinkenborg; one sister, Esther Pomrenke.
