Memorial services were held Thursday, January 29, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. in the United Methodist Church at Melvin for Rose Arlouine (Arlo) Vaala, 86, who died January 25 at Country View Manor in Sibley. The Rev. Sylvia Kennedy and the Rev. Willy Morfitt officiated.

Interment will be in Baker Township Cemetery at Melvin at a later date. Sanborn Funeral Home Service was in charge of arrangements.

Rose Arlouine (Frees) Vaala, the daugher of William and Grace (Klassen) Frees, was born at Melvin September 2, 1917. She lived her youth and received her education at Melvin, graduating from Melvin High School in 1934. She continued her education at Iowa State University in Ames, where she received a degree in education.

She was united in marriage to Ovey Vaala on June 27, 1941, at Melvin. Following their marriage, Ovey served in the United States Navy. While in the service, they resided in New York City and San Francisco, Calif. They returned to Melvin, where Ovey was employed in the lumberyard and fertilizer businesses. He later worked for Area Education Agency IV. Arlo was a homemaker and a teacher. Following Ovey's death, she continued to make her home in Melvin until entering Country View Manor at Sibley on October 7, 2003.

Survivors include her children: Sue Vaala of Sioux Falls, S. Dak., and Steve and his wife, Julie Vaala of Butte, Mont.; four grandchildren: Brenda, Jonathan, Dane and Katelyn, and four great-grandchildren: Tyler, Sydney, McKenzie and Travis; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Morf of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
