Adopted Caswell

My husbands great grandfather, Fredrick Almon Standiford, was adopted by Almon and Alta Standiford, a family in Glenwood, Mills CO, Iowa between 1900 and 1905. A relative told me that he was adopted from Ottumwa Iowa. He actually signed his son's birth certificate as Fredrick Caswell (not Standiford). This leads me to believe that his birth parents were Caswell. I also have a record that states his birth in 1896, although the Standiford's had no children living with them in the 1900 census. This leads me to believe that he was age 4 years or older at the time of his palcement with the Standiford's.
