Looking for William Roach

ROACH

I am looking for my g-grandfather William (?F.)Roach. I believe he was an early orphan train rider. I know he was born 1848-1850 in ?coal mining region of PA. Family history gets muddled here but I believe he was "adopted" by an Iowa family.
The "adoptive" father was a blacksmith and Wm was an apprentice to him until 1865. Supposedly (according to family lore), he celebrated his completion of his training by firing off a round from his rifle. This day was coincidentally the day Lincoln was assassinated and he was arrested as a confederate sympathizer!
After his apprenticeship he moved back to Philadelphia, PA. where he continued to be listed in the 1870-1930 census and worked as a saddler for the John Wanamaker's Department Store.
Any assistance or direction in this matter would be greatly appreciated
