Jacob Reason Shinkle was born in Indianapolis, Indiana,[sic] June 2, 1836.[sic] Married to Phoebe Anne Thorn, Dec 3, 1856. To them were born twelve children, nine of which are now living, three having preceded him to the Better Land.

He died February 7, 1907, age 70 years, 8 months 5 days. The funeral was held from the M.E. Church at Hartley, Sunday afternoon and interment made in the Hartley cemetery, Rev. Tompkins of Primghar, assisted by the home pastor officiating. The entire family was present to accompany him to his last resting place.

Jacob Shinkle had been a resident of O'Brien County for a number of years, during which time he has lead a quiet life on the farm in the vicinity of where he died. He was a devoted husband and a kind father; an honored citizen whom all considered worthy of their high esteem. None knew him but to speak his praise. Being a professed Christian, his profession was manifest in his every day life. He was a kind hearted man whose sympathies for the afflicted or those in trouble, was always manifest by his willingness to assist in bearing their burdens. For a number of years, there has been a slow but preceptible [sic] decline in how once vigorous manhood, yet his ambition never gave out. He was a strong minded man, whose reasoning power was normal almost to hi last moment on earth.

The relatives of the deceased have the sympathy of the entire community in which they have so long resided, in this sad hour of their bereavement.
