Charles Edward Westphal

Charles E. Westphal, 74, of Larrabee died Sunday, May 14, 2006, in his own home following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Larrabee, with Pastor Dennis Hopes officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Township Cemetery, rural Larrabee.

Charles was born Dec. 31, 1931, on a farm near Paullina, Iowa, the son of Edward and Elsie (Holck) Westphal. He attended rural school and graduated from Calumet (Iowa) High School in 1950. Following his graduation he farmed with his father near Calumet for several years.

On Jan. 18, 1952, he married Dorothy Weins in Paullina. They farmed near Larrabee, later moving to the town of Larrabee in 1967. Charles worked for Wilson Foods Inc. for many years in the beef cooler and smokehouse departments, retiring in 1992.

Charles served as Larrabee city councilman, then as mayor for 16 years, then again as city councilman. He was currently superintendent of the waste water lagoon in Larrabee and he did mowing for the city. He was very fond of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their activities. Charles was an active member of his church in Larrabee.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Larrabee; a son and his wife, Rick and Pam Westphal of Larrabee; a daughter and her husband, Teresa and Randy Newbury of Burnswick, Ga.; his mother and step-father, Elsie and Loran Hardin of Larrabee; a sister and brother-in-law, Ardelle and Leonard Richter of Germantown, Iowa; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Suzie Westphal of Banning, Calif., and Lonnie and Annette Westphal of Larkspur, Colo.; five grandchildren, Nick Westphal and his friend, Heather, Nate Westphal and his wife, Kate, and Nicole Westphal and her friend, Marty, Zachary Cargin and Cassie Cargin; and two great-grandchildren, Ty and Morgan Westphal.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Robert Westphal.
