Melvin Theodore Thompson
1875-1966

Melvin Thompson was born near Gilman in Marshall County, Iowa, on April 14, 1875. He passed away July 20, 1966 in Parker, South Dakota.

He moved with his parents, Christian and Serena (Benson) Thompson, to Hardin County near Roland, Iowa, when a small child, and at the age of 10 years, he came with them to O'Brien county where he grew to manhood.

He married Matilda Tjossem on February 26, 1901. To them were born five children: Mrs. Helen Ihle, San Leandro, California; Uneva (Mrs. Jennings Henderson), Paullina; Sada (Mrs. Arthur Henderson) Gaza; Clement, Marshalltown; Owen, San Leandro, California.

His wife, Matilda, died January 20, 1916. Soon afterward he moved to Canistota, South Dakota, and later to Parker. He was married to Margaret Glenn, who died in 1964. To them were born two children: Ruth (Mrs. Robert Pleiss) Albert Lea, Minnesota; and Robert, George.

Melvin farmed briefly, operated a steam driven threshing machine, and for many years engaged in road construction work with the Osterman Road Construction Company, in the course of which he spent two seasons helping to build the Alaskan Highway. He retired in his early eighties.

Survivors, other than his children include 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Also surviving are five brothers: John, Abel, Carney, Sidwell, and Isaac; and three sisters: Bertina Strand, Alma Strand, and Mavis Jacobs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Bertha Tjossem, and three brothers who died in infancy.
