Memorial Services Held February 22 for James F. Meyer

James Frederick Albert Meyer was born on March 17, 1924, in Paulina, Iowa. He was the son of Albert H. Meyer and Lillian Friedrich, both deceased. On March 22, 1924, Jim was baptized at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on May 23, 1937.

Mr. Meyer spent his life in the Paullina community. For the eight elementary years, he attended Paullina Public and Zion Parochial Schools and then entered Paullina Community High School, from where he graduated in 1941. After a year and a half at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, Mr. Meyer served in the United States Coast Guard, from which he was honorably discharged in 1946. He then entered Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana, and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration, graduating in 1948. In the summers of 1952, 53, and 54, Jim attended the School of Banking in Madison, Wisconsin. In May of 1974 he traveled to Boston, 'Massachusetts, for the Harvard 'Banking Seminar.

During Mr. Meyer's study at Valparaiso, he met Lucille Rucklos of Deshler, Nebraska. They were married on June 27, 1948 in Lucille's hometown. Soon after, they began their life together in Paullina, and Jim entered the bank in August of 1948. To this marriage God gave three children, Charlotte, Cecile and Gordon.

Twenty-one months ago, Mr. Meyer was hospitalized in Omaha, Nebraska for a brain aneurysm. After successful surgery, he returned home, to lead a normal life until December of last year. Another bleed of the same aneurysm put Jim back in the hospital, where he again had surgery. Although the operation went well, on January 5, 1975, he developed complications. Due to the inaccessibility of the aneurysm spot, his condition gradually weakened, and on February 19, 1975, Jim died. He had been in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Luci, of Paullina, Iowa; his children Char, of Tokyo, Japan; Cile, of Valparaiso, Indiana; Gordy, of Ames, Iowa; a brother, Harold of Littleton, Colorado; and two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Hartmeister, of Pinedale, Wyoming; and Miss Helen Meyer, of Cherokee, Iowa.

At the time of death, Mr. Meyer had attained the age of 50 years, 11 months and 2 days. During his life he worked for 26 ½ years at the First National Bank of Paullina of which the last six were spent as president of the bank. In the banking field, he was associated with BAI, being an active member and past president. He also had been secretary of Group I of Iowa Bankers for the past two years and had recently been elected president. He had served on the Iowa State Banking Commission with the Legislature.

Besides banking, Mr. Meyer was chairman of Veteran Affairs for O'Brien County, a member of County Realtors Association, Lions International, Town-Council, Paullina Flying Club, American Legion and VFW, Chamber of Commerce and City Planning Commission, American Field Service and various community affairs.

As a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Paullina, Jim was a member of International Laymen's League, served on the church council, was a Sunday School Superintendent, a Bible class teacher and sang in the church choir. In many ways, he shared his strong Christian faith with his family and friends. He was also a member on the Camp Board of the Camp Board of Governors for Camp Okoboji, Milford, Iowa.

On February 22, 1975, Mr. Meyer's body was buried in [WEST] Prairie View Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Pallbearers were Mr. Vernon Hibbing, Mr. Roy Ewoldt, Dr. Phillip Peterson, Dr. Jon A. Schiltz, Mr. Merle Bachman and Mr. Robert Engelke. Gaudian Funeral Home was in charge. Following a family communion service in the Meyer home, a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church was held to glorify God and thank and praise Him that Jim's soul is now at peace in heaven. Rev. Don Johnson officiated at both services. A fellowship for friends and relatives followed in the church.
