Funeral services for Mrs. W.D. Engelke, nee Emma Meyer, were held last Thursday at Sutherland with burial in Prairie View Cemetery at Paullina. Many friends, neighbors and relatives were present.

Mrs. Engelke, a native of Germantown, died of a heart attack at Hartley July 30. Preceding her sudden death, she had undergone a surgery and, after a satisfactory hospital convalescence of about a week, was ready to go home when she became suddenly ill.

She was born December 19, 1889, the daughter of C.F. and Alvina Hoermann Meyer, near Germantown. She was baptized the following day by Pastor E Zurer and was received into the Lutheran church by rite of confirmation April 5, 1903 with Pastor O.H. Horn officiating. Mrs. Engelke was an active member of Bethel Lutheran church at Sutherland, and was a charter member of its ladies group, "Bethel Helping Hands."

In addition to her parochial and public school education, she attended Bethany Ladies college at Mankato Minnesota. On May 31, 1919, she married W.D. Engelke at Paullina with Pastor A.H. Semmann officiating. Four children were born to the couple, one of whom, Donald, died in 1933.

Mrs. Engelke was an active member of the American Legion and has served as a Lady in Blue at the Mental Healthy Institute at Cherokee for several years, a project of public service sponsored by the auxiliary.

Survivors are her husband, Dick; one daughter, Mrs. Roy (Elva) Dau of Hartley; two sons, John of Sutherland and Robert at home; five grandchildren [redacted]; and two brothers, William and Albert H. Meyer, both of Paullina.

Baumgarten Funeral Home of Sutherland was in charge of arrangements.
