Memorial Services Held For W. D. Engelke

W.D. "Dick" Engelke, 83, passed away Thursday, December 20, 1973. He was a life long resident of this area, O'Brien County, Iowa.

Services were held in his memory on Saturday, December 22 at 1:30 p.m. in Bethel Lutheran Church, Sutherland, Iowa, with Rev. LeRoy Riemer and Rev. Donald Johnson as the officiating clergymen. The sermon, "From Death to Life," was based on verses 24-29 of Chapter 5 of the Book of John.

The hymns, "Laszt Mich Gehn" and "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" were sung. Mr. and Mrs. James Meyer sang a duet. Mrs. Clarence Hibbing was the organist,

Honorary casket bearers were Roy Rehder, Ed Shafer, Alfred Amendt, Ed Beck, Jeppe Larsen and Fritz Wolters. Casket bearers were William Engelke, Brian Engelke, Larry Schaa, Bernard Shuck, Alan Dau and F. A. Wiebersch.

Burial was in Prairie View Cemetery, Paullina. Iowa, with the Baumgarten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

William Dietrich Engelke

William Dieterich "Dick" Engelke, the son of John and Rebecca Segelke Engelke. was born April 29, 1890 in Liberty Township, O'Brien County. He passed away December 20. 1973 at the age of 83 having lived all of his life O'Brien County.

He was united in marriage to Emma Meyer May 31, 1918 [1919 - see Paullina Times, June 5, 1919 page 1 & Emma Meyer Engelke Obituary] at Paullina. To this union were born four children. The couple farmed near Sutherland. She passed away in July of 1956, and Dick retired from farming.

He was united in marriage to Tena Mews, June 28, 1959 at Sioux Falls. S.D. Since then he had lived in Paullina.

He was always active in community affairs, having helped organize the O'Brien County Farm Bureau, the Sheldon Production Credit Assn and the O'Brien County Conservation Board. He also held offices in the Sutherland Farmers Elevator and was active in the Town and County Saddle Club and the Sutherland and Paullina Senior Citizens.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a charter member of Bethel Lutheran Church of Sutherland.

Preceding him in death besides his wife, Emma, were his parents; a son Donald in 1933; two sisters and two brothers and one son-in-law. Roy Dau, in 1966.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Tena, one daughter. Mrs. Elva Dau of Hartley and two sons, John of Sutherland and Robert of Paullina; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Rudolph (Sophia) Appeldorn of Primghar; other relatives and friends.
