Jane Belle Walker Jochums, daughter of Lionel W. and Olive J. Walker, was born on October 3, 1880 at Eldora, Hardin county, Iowa. She was the oldest of four children. She passed away at home in Sanborn on Thursday, November 4th, at the age of 68 years, 1 month, and 1 day.

The Walker family moved to a farm near Sanborn when Jane was six years old, in July of 1887. There she grew up and attended country school. After graduation she taught school for three years.

On March 6, 1901, she was united in marriage to John Jochums. They established their home on the farm 8 miles northeast of Sanborn, where they continued to live until they moved to Sanborn in the Spring of 1945. To this union, three sons were born.

Preceding Mrs. Jochums in death were her mother and one brother, Lionel of Sanborn.

Surviving to mourn her passing are her widower, her father, Lionel Walker of Hartley, a brother, LeRoy Walker, and a sister, Mrs. James Holmes, both of Hartley. Also surviving are her three sons, Lionel of Hartley, Stephen and Richard, both of Berkeley, California, and eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mrs. Jochums was a very energetic person. In her home she moved swiftly and made the moments count. She was very versatile in handling whatever came to hand. She cared well for the needs of her family and home, and yet always found time to aid a neighbor in need. Many were the times that she went to help in other homes. And many were the cakes and cookies and gifts of food that were shared when need was apparent or birthdays were observed.

Mrs. Jochums loved flowers and enjoyed growing great abundance of them on the farm and in town. These she freely shared.

Mrs. Jochums was a member of the W.C.T.U. She served as president of the Hartley Chapter many years until illness intervened. She served also as O'Brien County W.C.T.U president. She was deeply in earnest about the temperance cause and labored faithfully for it.

Mrs. Jochums was vitally interested in the church. She served in many capacities in the Plessis Presbyterian, the Melvin Methodist, and later in the Sanborn Presbyterian Church, of which she became a member in 1925. Although living several miles from town, and until recent years on poor roads, she contributed largely of her interest, time, and energy to the work of the Church.

The Jochums home always had a warm welcome for pastors and visiting ministers. She continued active until June of 1946 when illness suddenly struck her. She was entertaining the Mary Circle in her home the day she was stricken, but continued to serve in spite of the enveloping illness until the work of the day was completed.

The remaining months were spent in bed and in a wheel chair, and he courage and cheerfulness remained with her to the end. She was tenderly and faithfully cared for by her husband during this trying period.

Mrs. Jochums will be greatly missed by her husband and family, and a large circle of relatives and friends. She leaves to them a wonderful memory of a life well lived.

Services were held at the home and later at the Presbyterian Church in Sanborn on Sunday, November 7, 1948, with Rev. G.F. Butler, pastor, officiating.

Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Meierhofer, Mr. Fred Meierhofer, all of Monon, Illinois, Mrs. R.E. Jochums and daughter of Oberlin, Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson of Paullina, and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Swalve and daughter of Harris.
