John Jochums, son of Bette and Bettje Jochums, was born on January 14, 1876, at Mononk, Illinois. He was the youngest of five children. On September 1, 1956, he passed away at Hartley, Iowa, at the age of 80 years, 7 months, and 17 days.

Mr. Jochums spent his early childhood in Illinois, coming to O'Brien county, Iowa, in 1894, at the age of eighteen. Here he lived with his father, two sisters, and two brothers on the farm near Sanborn in Lincoln Township, which he owned at the time of his death.

On March 6, 1901, he was united in marriage to Janie Walker. Three sons were born to this union.

Preceding Mr. Jochums in death were his wife, Janie; two sisters, Mary Meirhofer of Minonk, Illinois, and Lena Jochums of Hartley; and one brother, George, of Sanborn, Iowa.

Surviving to mourn his passing are the three sons: Lionel of Hartley, Stephen and Richard of Berkeley, California; three daughters-in-law; one brother, Joe Jochums of Hartley; nine grandchildren and numerous other relatives.

Mr. Jochums spent most of his long life farming in Lincoln township. As a young man, he often made winter trips to the west, gaining employment and experience on bridge construction shipboard work, and gold mining.

He and his wife were active in the work of the rural Presbyterian church at Plessis, Iowa; the Methodist church at Melvin, and Presbyterian church at Sanborn. At the time of his death, Mr. Jochums was an active member of the Hartley Methodist Church.

Mr. Jochums was an exemplary Christian man. The memory of his good life is a challenge to all of us. He was known as a man of good judgment, quiet, unassuming disposition, whose counsel was sought by many. He loved his family, his home, and his friends. He had a deep concern for his church and was held in high esteem by all who knew him.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the Hartley Methodist church by his pastor, the Reverend Raymond A. Roloff. Interment was made in the Pleasant View Cemetery.
