Sarah Maxine Cooper, the sixth child of John Henry and Wilhelmina Wilkens, was born on a farm southeast of Hartley, Iowa, on June 12, 1903. At an early age she was baptised in the Christian faith and was a member of the Hartley Methodist Church. She attended the Hartley Public School and graduated in 1927. She taught school in Clay and O'Brien counties until 1929.

On November 30, 1929, she was united in marriage with Clinton J. Cooper at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Claudette (Mrs. Roscoe Hourigan, Jr.) of Rockford, Illinois; Connie (Mrs Cloy Albert) Charles and Craig, all of Hatley. She lived the greater part of her life in Hartley and on a farm near here.

Sarah was apparently in good health until June 29, 1959, at which time she became ill and was taken to Saint Mary's Hospital in Rochester when the illness was diagnosed as a brain tumor. On August 1, she had surgery. After additional treatment, her health improved for a time. In early December her failing health was again apparent and on January 4th, she entered the Hand Hospital where she spent her remaining days. In spite of all that medical science and loving hands could do, she departed this life on January 31 at the age of 51 years, 7 monts, and 19 days.

She will be greatly missed by her family to whom she was completely devoted and her grandchildren of whom she was very fond.

Sarah was a faithful and willing worker in her church and the Evening Circle of the Woman Society. She was a member of Golden Sheaf Chapter No. 181, Order of the Eastern Star and the Athena Club.

Her parents and two brothers preceded her in death, her mother having passed away in 1928, her father in 1957, and infant brother in 1897, and brother Tony in 1931.

She leaves to mourn her passing her devoted husband; her four children; two sons-in-law; three grandchildren: Candice, Clark, and Carol Albert; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Mildred Cooper; three sisters, Mrs. O.S. Nelson of Aurelia, Mrs. Walter Sherrill of Washta and Mrs. Emil Thietje of McIntyre; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon at the Foley Funeral Home and the Methodist Church in charge of her pastor, the Reverend Raymond A. Roloff. Interment was made in Pleasant View Cemetery.
