Baxter B. Clayton (1897-1969)

Baxter B. Clayton, the son of Charles and Anna Ramsey Clayton, was born May 21, 1897 at Roxboro, North Carolina. He passed away June 24, 1969, at Dunedin, Florida at the age of 72 years, 1 month, and 3 days.

His early life was spent in Virginia, and it was there he attended the public schools. He also attended college at Bowling Green, Kentucky.

He served in the United States Army during World War I, and was in the Army of Occupation in France. He was honorably discharged at Boydenton, Virginia.

Baxter came to the Hartley, Iowa, community in 1938, and was active in the business affairs of this community for many years. He was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ until joining the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Clearwater, Florida in 196. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 288 here, and of Beacon Masonic Lodge.

He was united in marriage to Pearl Fender on August 16, 1940 at Primghar, Iowa. For the past two years they had made their home in Clearwater, Florida.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister, and two brothers.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Pearl, his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Hirt of Hartley; three grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Sally Chambers of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, three brothers, W.J. Clayton of Humboldt, R.T. Clayton of Sutherland, and Maynard Clayton of Chase City, Virginia, besides his many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a great many friends.

Services were held from the United Church of Christ, Hartley, Iowa, on June 28, 1979. Pastor Gerald Hurst officiated. Military services were conducted by Arthur Kirchhoff Post 288. He is at rest in Pleasant View Cemetery, Hartley, Iowa. Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
