Memorial services for Irene Ellen Dirksen were held August 10, 2000, at First Christian Church in Spencer, Iowa. Rev. Charles Schoeninger officiated. Interment was at 1 PM August 10 at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley, Iowa. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer was in charge of the arrangements.
Irene Ellen Dirksen, the daughter of Phillip L. and Mabel Holton Maughan was born September 16, 1913 in Tilden, Nebraska. Her childhood years were spent in Tilden where she received her education, graduating from Tilden High School.
Irene married Rolla Sherman in 1931. Following their marriage they moved to Hartley, Iowa, in 1936. She worked for the Hartley Creamer for nine years as an egg candler. She also worked for the Wellness Center in Hartley, assisting residents for 18 years. Rolla passed away on October 13, 1971. [sic]
Irene married Berend J. "Ben" Dirksen on March 1, 1975 in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they continued to live in Hartley until moving to Spencer in 1987. She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Spencer. Irene's whole life was centered around caring for her family.
On Sunday, August 6, 2000, Mrs. Dirksen passed away at the Spencer Hospital in Spencer, Iowa, at the age of 86.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rolla; her second husband, Ben, on February 16, 2000; three sisters: Agnes, Frances, and Mary; and one brother, Frank.
She is survived by her children: William Sherman and his wife, Shirley of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Cecil Sherman of Los Cruces, New Mexico, Vernon Sherman and his wife, Janet of Exeter, New Hampshire, Delores Murphy and her husband, Bob of Fox Island, Washington, Rodney Sherman and his wife, Shirley of Bellingham, Washington, Doyle Sherman and his wife, Shirlene of Keizer, Oregon, and Mark Sherman of Spencer; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; one great great great granddaughter, one sister, Catherine DeMuth of Elgin, Nebraska; as well as other relatives and friends.
