Funeral services in memory of Earl Clay were conducted Saturday, July 18, 1992, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley. Rev. John Schauer officiated the 10:30 a.m. service. Casket bearers were Arnold Pahl, Royce Hughes, Keith Fliss. Richard Stallman. Russ Berge and Bradley Pahl. Honorary casket attendant was Cully Lidberg. Committal service was in Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley. Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Earl L. Clay, the son of David and Leila Patton Clay, was born June 14, 1909, at Hartley, Iowa. He attended the rural schools near his childhood home and graduated from Hartley High School in 1928.

He was united in marriage to Evelyn Strampe at Paullina in 1929. and they recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. They made their home on a farm near Hartley and became the parents of three children. In 1960 they moved to town and built and operated E&E Bowling Lanes until retirement in 1972.

Earl was an avid sportsman. His hobbies were bowling, gardening and fishing. He also enjoyed traveling to see his children and grandchildren. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Hartley.

He passed away at Hartley on July 15. 1992. at the age of 83. Preceding him in death were his parents: one son-in-law. Donald Bleeke. in 1977: and one great-granddaughter. Katherine Ann Ogden. in 1981.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife. Evelyn; two sons and their wives: Keith and Wilma Clay of Erie, Colorado, and Gary and Mary Ann Clay of Fort Collins, Colorado: one daughter. Barbara Bleeke of Winthrop, Minnesota; ten grandchildren, twelve greatgrandchildren; two sisters, Ardys (Mrs. Virgil) Dillingham of Everly, and Irene Meier of Minneapolis; as well as other relatives and many friends.
