Long-Time Resident Succumbs; Last Rites Held for Fred Awe

Fred Awe, 87, resident of Germantown and Paullina nearly 72 years, died Saturday afternoon at the Henry Hibbing residence, where he made his home. He had been bedfast about two years.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Martin Peters officiating. Pallbearers were Norman Meyer, Vernon Meyer of Sutherland, Harlan Strampe of Steamboat Rock, Kermit Schultz of Sanborn, Delbert Scott of Westside and Gerald Awe, Jr. of Luverne, Iowa. Burial was in Prairie View Cemetery.

Mr. Awe was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, February 17, 1869. The family came to the United States that same year, settling in Cook County, Illinois. They later moved to Indiana.

In 1884 he came to Germantown, where he farmed for 34 years. His marriage to Mrs. Catherine Schultz took place February 25, 1903. In 1918 the family moved into Paullina. His wife died in 1934. He was also preceded by a son, one daughter and several grandchildren.

Surviving are four children: Mrs. Walter (Emma) Strampe, Mrs. Claus (Ella) Schroeder of Cherokee, Mrs. Henry (Rose) Hibbing [daughter-in-law], and Gerald Awe of Luverne, Iowa. Others who survive are ten grandchildren, one brother, John Awe of Dumont, Minnesota and several nieces and nephews, including Ed Kay of Paullina and Arthur Awe of Cherokee.

In charge of flowers at the services were Mrs. Bertha Schultz and Mrs. Ina Dornbusch, Jr. Cowan and Gaudian Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
