Funeral services held for Verna B. Panhorst

Funeral services for Verna B. Panhorst were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina, Iowa, with Rev. Karl Eckhoff officiating. "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "How Great. Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross" were sung by the congregation; The organist was Verla Hibbing. The casket bearers; were Todd Hattermann, Dale Tigges, Marvin Sjaarda, Darin Hattermann, David Hagedorn and Larry Feldotto. Interment was at Waterman Cemetery at Sutherland, Iowa, under the direction of the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home.

OBITUARY

Verna B. Panhorst, the daughter of Otto and Sophie Kappelmann Koch, was born May 31, 1914, in Franklin County, Missouri. She moved with her family to the Paullina area, where she received her education at Zion Lutheran School in Paullina.

On January 14, 1931, she was united in marriage to John Hoppe at her parent's farm home near Paullina. Her husband preceded her in death on February 25, 1953, in Gaza, Iowa.

On June 1, 1955, she was united in marriage to George Panhorst in Windom, Minnesota. After their marriage the couple settled in Paullina where she was head cook at the Paullina Community School for 17 years until her retirement. George preceded her in death on February 25, 1981, in Sioux Falls, SD.

She remained in the family home until moving to the Primghar Care Center in October of 1999. She passed away at the care center on Monday, April 15, 2002, reaching the age of 87 years, 10 months and 14 days.

She was baptized on June 28, 1914, in Beouf [sic Boeuf] Creek, Missouri, and later confirmed on April 28, 1928, at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina where she currently was a member. She enjoyed playing cards, gardening, canning, cooking, baking, and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Verna leaves to cherish her memory one son, Marvin and his wife, Florebel Hoppe of Primghar; four grandchildren: Bradley and his wife, Esther Hoppe, Valerie Hoppe and Douglas and his wife, Peri Hoppe, all of Sioux Falls, SD, and Alan and his wife, Brenda Hoppe of Sibley; two great-grandchildren: Alec and Claire Hoppe; two step-great-grandsons; and four step-great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Tigges of Peterson, Iowa, also nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents; one brother, Ray Koch; and one sister, Arlene Hagedorn.
