Chris Meiske was born in Leipzig, Germany, on April 9, 1873, and passed away at Hartley, Iowa, on June 22, 1956, at the age of 83 years, 2 months, and 13 days.
Mr. Meiske emigrated from Europe to America in the year of 1890, when he was seventeen years old, and landed at Baltimore, Maryland. After coming to this country, he worked as a laborer around Postville, Iowa.
He was united in marriage to Lizzie Steinbeck on March 9, 1899. To this union, three children were born: Lillie (Mrs. O.D. Wagner), Will and John, all of Hartley.
Mr. Meiske farmed near Primghar and later moved to Hartley where he farmed until 1940. His wife preceded him in death on May 22, 1936. For the past several years, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Wagner.
Besides his three children, he is survived by one son-in-law; two daughters-in-law, four grandsons, Dean and Junior Wagner and Jay and John Meiske, Jr.; and one great granddaughter; one sister, Mrs. Louise Hiens of Postville, Iowa; besides other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock by the pastor, the Reverend Raymond A. Roloff. Pall bearers were the four grandsons. Interment was made in Pleasant View Cemetery.
Relatives attending the funeral were from Postville, Decorah, Sac City, Primghar, Sutherland, Iowa; Slayton and Westbrook, Minnesota; and LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
