The funeral of Grandfather Short, mention of whose death was made in our last issue, was held from the Methodist church last Friday afternoon. He had been a sufferere for many months from a peculiar and rare disease that caused his flesh to peel off in flakes, and which was exceedingly irritating and painful, so that death came as a sweet release.
Charles M. Short was born in Tennessee, March 15, 1822, and died in Primghar, Augusust 22, 1907. Moved to Beardstone, Illinois in 1842, then settled in Benton, LaFayette County, Wisconsin.
Was married to Nancy A Wood, February 10, 1847. Six children were born to this union, four sons and two daughters, one son died in infancy and Thomas H. Short, who died November 26, 1901.
In 1886 he moved to a farm near Sutherland.
Deceased leaves a wife, two sons, and two dauthers: William Short of Sutherland, Iowa, Margaret Fisher of Georgetown, Colorado, Amy Fairley, of Sutherland, Iowa; Joseph J. Short of Primghar, with whom deceased made his home, and Drucilla Moore, who was adopted when a small child. Six grandchildren and one great-grandchild are left to mourn his departure.
Mrs. Short was a man of more than common ability and in the neighborhoods where he has lived was always held in high esteem as a citizen. His death will be sincerely mourned.
