Funeral services were held for Hattie Groen at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley Wednesday afternoon, December 15. Rev. Bernard Sayler officiated and burial was at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Hartley. The Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
The casket bearers were Wayne Groen, Kenneth Groen, Kevin Groen, Lynn Goren, Alan Groen and Douglas Groen.
Hattie Mae Groen, the daughter of Dick and Anna Geerdes Smith was born March 10, 1895 at George, Iowa. She was educated in rural schools near her childhood home and was the eldest of twelve children.
She was united in marriage to Ernest Groen on January 27, 1916 at George and they farmed near Hartley until retiring and moving to town in 1943. She as a member of the Trinity United Chruch of Christ at Hartley and the Dorcas Society and had been active in the Farm Bureau in earlier years.
She passed away at the hospital in Hartley on December 13, 1982 at the age of 87. Preceding her in death were her husband, two sons, Richard and Erwin; her parents, four brothers, Ernest, Fritz, Dick and Reinhold; and one granson, Dewayne Groen.
Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Leo of Hartley and Arthur of Hutchinson, Minnesota; one daughter, Mrs. Alice DeBoer of Hartley, ten grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, five sisters, Bertha Hansen, Kathryn Musselman, Elsie Jackson and Allis Isebrands, all of Vista, California, and Teressa Smith of Bettendorfe, Iowa; two brothers, Ralph of George and Ted of Sheldon, as well as other relatives and friends.
