Funeral services for Bertha Klatt were held at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley Monday afternoon, June 2. Rev. Bernard Sayler officiated. Burial was at the Pleasant View Cedmetery at Hartley, with the Baumgarten Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Bertha Klatt, the daughter of Waalks K. and Johanna DeGroot Popkes, was born January 11, 1893 near Ashton, Iowa. She received her education in the country schools near her childhood home.
She was united in marriage to Emil W. Klatt, Jr. on September 2, 1914 at Sibley, Iowa. Their married life was spent living in Hartley, where Bertha was a cook at Red's Cafe for many years.
Her memberships included the Trinity United Church of Christ at Hartley, the Trinity Dorcas Society, and several other civic and social clubs throughout the years. She had most recently been making her home at Longhouse Residence in Spencer.
She passed away on May 30, 1986 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital, having reached the age of 98 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil, in 1948, her three children, Clifford (Bud), Ruby, and Ruth; her parents; and three brothers.
Left to cherish her memory are her six sisters: Sarah Klatt and Katherine Scharlepp of Sibley, Lena Schoemaker and Ruth Applegate in Colorado, Mamie Kinports in Washington, and Hanna Czepa in Minnesota; one brother, Leonard (Red) Popkes in Washington; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
