Last rites for William Strampe Sr., Prominent Citizen Many Years

Funeral services for William Strampe, Sr., 85, were held Saturday afternoon at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Martin Peters officiating. Burial was in Prairie View cemetery. Mr. Strampe had died at a Sioux City hospital early Wednesday morning.

William Strampe was born on Dec, 1, 1869, in the village of Lueder, Providence of Hanover, Germany, the fourth child of Dorothea, nee Burmeister, and Joachim Strampe. He received his religious instructions and was baptized and confirmed as a youth in Germany.

In the year 1883, at the age of 13, he emigrated with his family to the United States, where they settled at Marcus, Iowa. On May 18, 1890, he was married to Lizzie Gruenhagen, and the couple became the parents of ten children.

After a few years as a carpenter in Germantown, he operated a country creamery in that vicinity until 1910, when he moved his family to a farm west of Paullina. In 1919 he sold the farm and the family moved to their new home in Paullina, when he pursued a number of business ventures. He also served two terms on the board of supervisors of O'Brien county, and was chairman of the board when the present county courthouse was erected. Issues of the Times of forty years ago tell that Mr. Strampe and other members of the board traveled to
Des Moines and other cities to study courthouse design and costs in order to make a wise choice for their own county.

His eldest son, Arthur, died May 23, 1920, and his wife died Oct. 24, 1939. His own health began to fail late last summer, and shortly before Christmas he entered a hospital in Sioux City.

He is survived by six sons and three daughters: Edward of Chandler, Minn., William Jr., of Paullina, Amanda (Mrs. E, Rosenberg) of Chandler, Minn., Ben of Sioux City, Walter of Paullina, Alvina (Mrs. P.L. Derby) of Sioux City, Laura (Mrs. Julius Brehmer) of Hartley, Harry of Sioux Rapids, Clarence of Valley Springs S. Dak., 21 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and one brother , Fred , of Paullina. One sister and one brother preceded.

His six sons served as pallbearers at the last rites.
