Was Butcher Here Before Turn of Century-Henry Strampe Buried
Funeral services were held here Thursday afternoon, June 22, for one of Paullina's first businessman, one of its most devoted churchmen and until not many years ago, one of the best known cattle raisers in the community. Henry Strampe. Death came to him Monday evening, June 19 at his home here. He had reached the venerable age of 88 years, 7 months and 15 days and was active until he began to lose his strength and health during the past year.
A short service was held at the home, followed by a service at 2 o'clock at Zion Evangelical Lutheran church. Interment was in Prairie View cemetery. The Rev. Martin Peters officiated.
Henry Strampe, son of Joachim Strampe and his wife, Dorothea nee Burmeister, was born Nov. 4, 1861 at Lueder in the province of Hanover, Germany. At the age of 21, in April of 1883, he came to America. During the first six years in this country he lived in the Germantown community. In 1889 he came to Paullina and was married to Anna Meyer. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Zuerrer. Two sons and one daughter were born to them.
While still in his native land, Henry Strampe had learned the mason and butchering trade, and when St. John congregation of Germantown and Trinity congregation of Marcus were ready to erect their houses of worship it was he who built the foundations and did the plastering. From 1892 to 1912 he operated a meat market in Paullina in conjunction with various partners. After that he devoted himself to farming and cattle-raising. He gained considerable reputation for the fine cattle he produced in his farm. In 1941 he retired and moved again to Paullina.
Henry Strampe was active in the affairs of his church. When Zion Lutheran church was organized he was one of the charter members and at the time of organization was elected to the dual office of elder and trustee. The property upon which the present church and parsonage stand was his gift to the church.
He is survived by his wife, his sons Otto of Marcus and Henry of Esherville and his daughter, Dora (Mrs. Willis Korte) of Alton, Ill., two brothers, William and Fred of Paullina and his sister, Mrs. Hartwig Meyer of Sioux City, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
