It was with surprise and genuine sorrow that the many friends of Mrs. C.E. West learned, Saturday morning, that she had died the previous evening at 11:45 of heart failure, being ill only about ten minutes. No one knew that she was ill and the news of her death coming to those who had no longer go than Friday evening seen her about, seemingly in her usual robust health, could hardly be credited.
Mrs. C.E. West was born at Poughkeepsie, NY, October 2, 1842. When but six years old she went with her family to Wisconsin, then an unbroken wilderness. Here she lived until 1878, when she moved to Butler county, Iowa, and from there in 1889 to O'Brien county.
Her maiden name was Jane Ann Haigh, and she was married to Chas. West, October 4, 1869, and to them were born four children, all living to manhood and womanhood. Mrs. Minnie Dubbert of Fayette, Mrs. Ruth Bisbee of Hartley, Anna, who lives in Colorado, and William N. West, who lived with his parents here, but was attending school in Des Moines at the time of his mother's death.
Mrs. West was a devoted wife and mother. She was possessed of a kindly spirit and was universally esteemed, and numbered all her acquaintances as her friends. She was a faithful member of the bible class of the M.E. Sunday School and will be greatly missed by this class.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 20, at 3 pm. at the M.E. Church conducted by the Rev. O.S. Bryan, who took his text from Psalm X-XII, The I.O.O.F. and Rebekah orders attended in a body. Many beautiful floral tributes were sent in token of remembrance. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved husband and family.
