Emil Detlef Selk (1887-1971)

Emil D. Selk, the son of Detlef and Dorothea Hinz Selk, was born April 28, 1887 in Grant Township near Sutherland, Iowa, and passed away May 1, 1971 at Hartley, Iowa. He was 84 years and 3 days of age.

His entire lifetime was spent in O'Brien County and the Sutherland community. As a child, he attended the rural schools near his home.

On December 12, 1909, he was united in marriage to Maria Peper at Sutherland. They became the parents of seven children. The couple farmed in and around Sutherland for several years. Prior to his retirement in 1960, he was caretaker of the Waterman Cemetery for twenty-one years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife in 1965, 3 brothers, and one sister in infancy.

Left to cherish his memory are four sons, Delbert of Cainesville, Missouri, Raymond of Larrabee, Elmer of Linn Grove, and Harold of Cherokee; three daughters, Mrs. Everett (Edna) Thurman of Lake Park, Mrs. Frances (Margaret) Tilton of Cherokee and Mrs. Jack (Dorothy) Triplett of Auburn, Washington; fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Mrs. Alma Selk of Sutherland, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
