1889 - Maria Christina Selk - 1965
Mrs. Marie Christina Peper Selk, the daughter of Jergen and Christina Peper, was born in Ellingstedt, Germany, July 17, 1889, and departed from this life while a patient in the Hartley hospital, March 2, 1965.
At the age of sixteen, she left her native Germany and came to the United States. On December 12, 1909, she was united in marriage to Emil D. Selk, the wedding having been performed near Sutherland (Iowa). To the Selks were born four sons and three daughters. The Sutherland community continued to be the couple's place of residence. In 1959, they observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
Mrs. Selk was a member of the Methodist Church, the Woman's Society of Christian Service, the East Side Circle, and had at one time been president of the Jolly Mothers Club. She took great pride in her children and her home.
Preceding her in death were her parents and three brothers.
Those who survive include her devoted husband, Emil D. Selk, of Sutherland, Iowa; a brother, John Peper, in Germany; four sons, Delbert Selk of Princeton, Missouri; Raymond Selk of Larrabee, Iowa; Elmer Selk of Spencer, Iowa; and Harold Selk, of Cherokee, Iowa. Three daughters, Mrs. Everett (Edna) Thurman of Lake Park, Iowa; Mrs. Francis (Margaret) Tilton of Cheorkee, Iowa; and Mrs. Jack (Dorothy) Triplett, of Auburn, Washington. Five great grandchildren, fifteen grandchildren, many other relatives, and long cherished kind neighbors and friends.
Funeral services under the direction of Baumgartens, were held in the Methodist Church Saturday afternoon, March 6, 1965, 2 p.m. Her minister, the Rev. Warren A. Bintz, was in charge. Interment was made in the Waterman Cemetery.
