Fred L. Powell was born at Hastings, Minnesota, September 26, 1870, the first born to Charlotte Augusta Smith and her husband, George A. Powell. He lived there until 1878 when he came with his mother to Sanborn and here he grew to manhood.
When sixteen years of age, he entered the service of the Milwaukee, serving for eight years as fireman with headquarters at this place. He then took a run as brakeman from Sioux City to Mitchell, and last October was transferred to the Manilla line, where he was running at the time of his death.
He was a sober and industrious young man [illegible]
